I tend to use conversational one-hour lessons to help students develop a genuine intrest in a subject so they can excell. During in lessons we would work to solidify what has been taught in class and go over any areas where there's uncertainty. For GCSEs in particular I am a huge advocate for past papers, therefore I often work through a past paper during the lesson so that students can see how they are likely to be tested on a certain topic. I have previously helped students to gain 7s and above in subjects such as History, Chemistry and DT.
