I've been tutoring Maths since 2021, working with KS3 and GCSE students both through an agency and privately, so I have a good feel for the different ways students get stuck - some struggle with a specific topic, others lose confidence more generally after falling behind. I always start by figuring out exactly where a student's understanding breaks down, rather than assuming, and build from there using examples and methods that make sense to them specifically, not just the textbook explanation. I keep lessons structured but responsive - working through past paper questions where useful, but adjusting pace constantly based on what I'm hearing back from the student. I explain concepts clearly and patiently, and I make a point of checking understanding rather than just moving on, so nothing gets missed. My own experience staying close to Maths through further study means I can also show students how these skills connect to bigger goals, not just the next exam. Above all, I want students to leave lessons feeling more confident than when they started, not just more informed - confidence is usually what's actually missing.
