Advert description
I have 8 years' experience as a tutor with students from middle school to undergraduate levels. I have primarily taught Maths & Sciences, but also French, English, and general homework aid, in settings including 1-on-1, exam prep in small groups, and larger study groups (15 to 20 students).
As a scientist, I am passionate about learning and discovering, and I love sharing that enthusiasm. As a teacher, I strive to help students unlock their potential, achieve their goals, and find joy and satisfaction in their work. I work as a research scientist and usually only take on 1 to 3 students at a time, accompanying them for one year or more to ensure consistency. For exam preparation sessions, I can occasionally provide shorter-term, higher-intensity courses (a few days to weeks). My education includes an M.Sc in Engineering from ENSTA ParisTech (a top French Engineering school) and a PhD in Neuroscience from University College London (UCL). I am also fluent in French.
I adapt lesson duration, structure, and exercises to the requirements of the student(s) & parent(s). For instance, in the past I have conducted:
- 1-hour individual homework aid sessions,
- 1- to 3-hour individual subject-specific lessons,
- half-day exam preparation sessions intercut with short breaks, either individually or in small groups (2 to 5 students).
Usually, my primary focus is on helping students build confidence in their own reasoning abilities, bridge gaps in their knowledge, and foster their enthusiasm for learning and growing. To this effect, I emphasise verbal reasoning (asking students to explain what they are doing and why), encourage any and all questions, and help students identify and correct mistakes themselves whenever possible. For more advanced students, I have also worked to build motivation and focus by orienting lessons towards furthering the student's own goals (e.g. pursuing a specific career, improving a personal skill, passing an exam). Finally, I have also worked with students on their studying methodology, offering tips on learning techniques & materials, exercise types and structuring study time, to find the approach that worked best for them.
