History Tutor for all ages World History and Cultures Specialist

Advert description
Good day,

My name is James. A Master's Degree in World History and Cultures with a love of maps and how the world has worked over time is the reason that I am greatly enjoying tutoring.

I have extensive experience of working with children and young adults from the age of 4 - 18 across three countries - UK, Switzerland, and the USA. This has been across a variety of platforms, from the academic to social growth.

My areas of expertise are: the Late Middle Ages in Europe, The Mamluk Sultanate and Ottoman Empire, the American Geopolitical position post-isolationism, and the Decolonisation of the British Empire after World War Two.

I used to tour Europe with a midly successful rock band and have lived and worked in several countries - not quite a stuffed shirt but definitely serious about the educational work that I perform.

The writing and citation building that I would be able to provide would be better suited to older students, though I have worked with younger students before as well.

Thank you,

James

There is a certain type of history that is taught in schools that some of us like to refer to as "great man history". The generals and leaders who define wars and shape nations. This of course is helpful in defining who ruled what, where, when, and why but it does not tell us the whole story. Trade, basic human needs, and enrivonmental factors are genrally far more influencial. The story of human existance is a the story of humanity and worthy of sharing. No matter where anyone ends up in their career, or in life in general, there is no doubt that understanding the past is a privilege and a gift.

My lessons would be exploratory and Socratic rather than Didactic. Ahead of each meeting we would talk about the topic that you (the student) needed to write about and whether it would focus on the particular historical moment, or the topic in general, and then you would return. At the next meeting we would talk about the issue that you had been writing about and then we would question each other to see if you could outdo me. I would then ask you to write a small extra piece that evening about what you did correctly. If you had found nothing then you would have to write the exact same piece in order to learn from the other perspective.

If you decide to spend your time learning the Kings & Queens of England, or the US Presidents in order that's on you, however if you claim to be able to I will have to double check.
