Private Tuition in Music Theory in Edinburgh - Beginner to University Level

Advert description
I believe theory is all about practical application and finding reason for learning it - it can be super fun and practical as well - composition, improvisation, arrangement are all things we can look at and apply music theory to what you are interested in looking at and applying.

I can offer some professional experience and education. I have a BA (Hons) Popular Music and MSc Composition for the Screen degree specialising in guitar performance, orchestral composition, and sound design.

On top of freelance private teaching for the past 7 years, I have 2 years experience teaching at music schools providing both 1-2-1 and group classes.

I was lucky enough to also be recruited by my university to assist with music theory education to 1st and 2nd year students of the BA (Hons) Popular Music degree based on my performance in the subject and capacity for teaching.

I came to Honza to improve my knowledge of Jazz harmony and improvisation. I found his style useful as he focussed on the application of the concepts we looked at, rather than just running me through scales and chords in order to say he'd shown me it. He was also sure to introduce me to accessible beginner jazz repertoire and provided me with a reading list of music to listen to with the aim of improving my knowledge of the genre in general. Honza's clear explanation of more complex musical theory was a particular strength of the lessons, and I always left feeling sure about what I needed to practise in order to progress. I can't recommend these lessons highly enough.

Honza is a very friendly and enthusiastic teacher. He made sure that our lessons were directed by my goals and interests and were also well suited to my ability level. Everything was organised in a very well-structured way, and he provided printouts and other helpful resources when something needed a visual explanation. He's very patient when explaining difficult concepts, and it was great fun discussing musical ideas with him; his passion for music and guitar is infectious.
