I would start by teaching the student parts of the guitar, and how to tune it. Then basic open chords and songs that use them. And from there we start working from the grade syllabuses (e.g. Rockschool, Trinity Rock and Pop) and if there’s a song they want to learn that isn’t from there, I will still do my best to teach it to them. At the end of the day, these lessons are for their benefit. And I will assign them stuff to work on in their own time, as I know from learning to play myself that north of 90% of the work is done in the student’s own time.
