IQRA METHOD
How can a simple small book remain relevant for more than 30 years?
The Iqra method is one of the most remarkable learning Quran innovations I have encountered.
Written by KH. As'ad Humam in 1990 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the six-volume Iqra series continues to be widely used today. Despite having no colorful illustrations or modern design elements, it remains highly effective in helping students learn to read the Quran.
What makes it special is its method. Instead of requiring students to memorize the entire Hijaiyah alphabet from the beginning, it introduces letters gradually. Students first learn to distinguish between a few letters such as ا and ب. With repetition and patience, additional letters are introduced step by step. In the second volume, students begin learning connected letters as they appear in the Quran. Till in the last volume, student can read long sentences retrieved from the Qur’an. The books provide a clear learning flow, and let teachers adapt their teaching. Teachers can manage the classroom, use creative learning media, and adjust their approach to the student's age, interests, and environment.
For example, when teaching a six year old male student online, I use AI tools to make the first page of Iqra 1 more engaging and visually appealing. The method remains the same, but the delivery can evolve with the times. Perhaps that is why the Iqra method has expanded far beyond Indonesia and continues to influence Quran education across Southeast Asia.
To me, the Iqra series is a powerful example of a timeless educational innovation. Great methods endure because they solve real problems in a simple and effective way.
