Understanding the World, Transforming Ourselves

Advert description
Drawing from my practical experience in communities and schools, and PhD research, I teach Sociology as a subject that invites students to critically examine the forces shaping our lives from inequality, culture, and identity, to institutions, resistance, and global change.

Using the lens of the sociological imagination, I support students to make connections. Whether we are exploring Marxist theory, functionalism, symbolic interactionism, or postcolonial, feminist and critical race perspectives, the emphasis is always on making theory relevant to our lived realities.

What My Sociology Lessons Are Like

• Dialogical and Reflective: We question what we take for granted. Students are encouraged to bring their own experiences into conversation with theory.

• Critical and Grounded: We don’t just learn about theorists, we connect and apply their ideas to contemporary issues like policing, education, youth cultures, social movements, and global inequality.

• Relational and Supportive: I create a learning environment grounded in mutual respect, where every student's experience is recognised as a valid source of knowledge, and diverse perspectives are both welcomed and critically examined.

Why Sociology Matters in My Teaching

Across every subject I teach, whether Education, Youth Work, Community Development, Peace Education, Coaching, or Research Methods, Sociology provides the critical foundation. It equips students with the tools to:

• Analyse power, culture, and structure

• Understand how social identities are formed and contested

• Recognise systemic patterns and possibilities for transformation

• Develop deeper awareness across knowledge, action, and professional practice
