Another case was tackling a weakness with perentages and fractions towards passing an scholarship entrance exam for an independent school. The pupil passed th exam and told his parents it was down to my tutoring.
I take time to assess basic skills; viz. addition, subtaction, multiplication, and division; taking care to see how these are approached and handled. I also encourage the pupil to tell me how they feel about the subject, how they think they are getting on, what they would like to know, and how they might not be "getting it".
In the case of mature students, the same applies together with what applications they might be having difficulty with at work.
