Advert description
I studied Classics at Oxford for three years, and I received Firsts in all of my Latin language exams (though I did not finish the course, for health reasons). I received an A* in both my Latin A-levels and Latin GCSE exams. I took part in some of the Latin speaking circle sessions, have had original + translated Latin poetry published in Alexandria, the Oxford Classics undergraduate journal, and I am very enthusiastic about using Latin as a living language! If the Romans chatted in Latin to gossip about friends, discuss politics, and tell bad jokes, then so can we! I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised by how quickly you're able to communicate, even at a basic level, in Latin - it's really an achievement to feel proud of!
What I offer: Latin at all levels (from complete scratch, to undergraduate-level, to poetry composition, and anything in between!). I'm flexible, and happy to offer exclusively homework help, trawling through set texts (they aren't as daunting as they seem, I promise!). or exclusively language-learning and practice - or a mix depending on the week! We'll be checking in regularly to make sure you're getting as much as possible out of our sessions.
Who I am: I adore language learning - I'm conversational in Portuguese (Brazilian), German, and Esperanto (see if you can guess which of these I use the most!), one of which I only picked up last year - and have developed a broad knowledge of the best techniques for learning; of the most common mistakes and confusions which new learners often fall into; and how to maintain confidence and enthusiasm along the whole process! And it's not just languages: I'm currently trying to pick up unicycling at the moment, and I will be keeping you updated on my progress.
I'm also LGBT (and very specifically trans + nb) friendly. And I have personal experience with disability + neurodivergency, so I know first hand how important it is to accommodate any needs, and to personalise teaching to match your own learning style, to go at a pace that feels rewarding as opposed to overwhelming, and to keep any stress or pressure to a minimum: your wellbeing comes first, and *not* your exam results.
