After getting A*s in all subjects I intend on teaching I believe the best teaching method for GCSE maths is to focus on exam practice with past papers as examiners tend to use very similar question structures each year, so familiarising yourself with the types of questions they like to use would ensure that you’ll never come across a question you can’t comprehend in an actual exam. This has helped me achieve my grades, and also the people I’ve previously tutored to do the same. After going through the fundamentals of each topic I like to find an exam paper and RAG ( Red Amber Green) rate each question, skimming over each question at first without actually answering it and having my tutee say if they could confidently answer it (to which I’d give that question a green rating), potentially answer it despite some difficulty (to which I’d give it an Amber rating), or if they don’t think they could answer it (to which I’d give it a Red rating). I’ve found this to be the most effective way of identifying a students strengths and weaknesses, and what lessons to plan in response.
