When designing and planning appropriate lessons, the learner group must be taken into careful consideration and how they will respond and learn from the planned material. I discovered when teaching 16–19-year-olds that they enjoy mobile phone use even when it can be a hinderance to their learning. To combat this, I used learning tools such as Kahoot and GimKit that allow a more positive use of a mobile phone and enable learners to engage with Maths related questions in a less traditional manner which results in higher engagement and attention levels. More often that, I often designed my own learning tools ranging from quizzes on Socrative to physical puzzles and worksheets. Another example of adhering to learner needs and taking a personalized approach is when I work with ESOL learners who suffer from a language barrier, my lesson plan will include more literacy and key words will be emphasizes with definitions provided on PowerPoint slides and worksheets for them to copy and remember. I believe innovation is a vital part of teaching as what works for some may not work for others. I ensure my lesson plan has differentiation and scaffolding methods that are tailored to learner cohorts and reflect British Values. Along with what happens inside the classroom, it is necessary to develop outside the classroom for which I attended staff meetings to build collaborative relationships and also took part in various CPD activities.
