When I first start working with a student, I like to have a relaxed discussion about how they’re getting on at school. I ask them what they feel confident with and what they find more challenging, so we can plan our sessions around their needs. I believe it’s important for students to be actively involved in their own learning, so I encourage them to share their goals and take ownership of their progress.
In each lesson, we begin with a short set of questions on a topic we’ve previously agreed on, giving the student a chance to apply what they’ve revised. We then go through the answers together, working through any difficulties and clearing up misunderstandings. I’ll then guide them through the topic with a structured explanation and some worked examples, before giving them a few more practice questions to consolidate their understanding.
To keep progress consistent, I set a focus topic at the end of each session for the student to revise before the next lesson. This steady cycle of practice, feedback, and consolidation helps build both confidence and long-term understanding.
