My lessons are carefully structured but flexible, depending on the student’s needs and goals. At the start of tutoring, I like to identify the topics a student is confident with as well as the areas they find more challenging. From there, I plan lessons that focus on building both understanding and exam performance in a clear, step-by-step way.
A typical lesson usually begins with a short review of previous material to reinforce learning and address any questions from earlier sessions. We then move on to introducing or revising a topic, where I explain key concepts in a straightforward way and break down any difficult ideas into smaller, more manageable steps. I encourage students to ask questions throughout so that any misunderstandings can be dealt with immediately rather than building up over time.
Once the core content is covered, we spend a large part of the lesson working through exam-style questions. I find this is one of the most effective ways to improve, as it helps students learn how to apply their knowledge under exam conditions. I guide students through questions at first and then gradually encourage them to attempt problems independently, offering support when needed. This helps build both confidence and independence over time.
A strong focus of my teaching is exam technique. Many marks are lost not because students don’t understand the topic, but because of small mistakes or unclear methods. I help students learn how to structure their answers properly, recognise common question patterns, and avoid typical pitfalls.
I also adapt my teaching style to each individual. Some students benefit from a slower, more detailed approach, while others prefer a faster pace with more challenging problem-solving. I adjust lessons accordingly to make sure each student is appropriately challenged and making steady progress.
Outside of lessons, I can also provide extra practice questions or targeted homework if helpful, and I’m happy to review any work a student completes independently before the next session.
Overall, my aim is to create a supportive and focused learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, building confidence, and steadily improving their mathematical ability.
