Having 13 years tutoring experience as well as 9 years overall teaching experience - I do understand pupils. I dont like to follow any rigid structure for my lessons, instead I like to tailor my approach to fit the needs of each individual student.
I am flexible in terms of teaching content, and am happy to teach one topic per lesson, or if the student prefers multi topics for short time periods (perhaps for revision), this is also something I can accommodate.
Most importantly, I try to create a safe space for students to discuss concerns, Maths related or not, taking a holistic view to their wellbeing. By spending some time feeding their emotional needs, I find that this leads to more of an output in terms of their motivation and confidence in Maths. The fact that we do not follow any particular lesson plan or rigid structure is welcomed by pupils, we chat, we work and I aim to support the student as a whole.
Now I do have a wealth of experience in teaching Maths, however this was not always the case. There was a time where I also experienced my own challenges in Maths. Usually reflecting on this with my students and teaching them tools to overcome making those silly mistakes is what makes all the difference in improving in ability and engaging better with Maths.
Feedback from fellow colleagues, parents and students alike is always positive. For some students it has meant that they have left school with a maths GCSE, for other students it has meant willingness to engage better in maths lessons.
