I have been tutoring since I was 16 and have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of children and teenagers, from primary school through to secondary school. I specialise in GCSE Maths and Science, but I have also supported students with different learning difficulties and individual learning needs.
One thing that makes my approach to tutoring a little different is that I am dyslexic myself. Because of this, I understand first hand that sometimes the traditional way of explaining something just does not click, and that does not mean a student is not capable. Sometimes, you simply need someone to explain it in a different way.
I really enjoy getting to know how each student thinks and finding the approach that works best for them. For me, tutoring is not about changing the student to fit the way something is taught, but changing the way something is taught so the student can understand it.
I design each lesson around where the student is in their GCSE journey and what they specifically need help with. Some students may only need support with a particular topic, while others may benefit from working through the GCSE content more systematically to identify their strengths and the areas they need to improve. I do not move on to a new topic until I am confident that the student has properly understood the previous one.
I also regularly revisit topics from previous lessons and test students on what they have already learnt. I believe this is important because understanding something once is not enough. Students need to be able to remember and apply that knowledge later.
For Maths, I set homework regularly as I believe that practising equations and problem solving is one of the most important ways to improve. For Science, I usually focus homework more on building knowledge and understanding at first. As students get closer to their exams, I introduce more exam style questions and exam techniques to help them apply their knowledge and approach questions confidently.
Most importantly, I want my students to become more confident in themselves and their abilities. I love seeing students look back at their work and realise how much they have improved. One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring for me is seeing a student feel genuinely proud of what they have achieved and how far they have come.
