First off, I would go through a topic they find difficult via explaining the basics and then doing a few practice questions in the process. Then I’d leave them to do practice questions, asking me for help if they needed. If this didn’t work for a particular student then I would adapt my teaching style to make it work for them.
Making sure they’re listening by using frequent questions would moreover ensure that the information goes in. I would further come back to topics regularly that they find difficult in order to ensure that they’ve understood the concept well.
I’ve had experience helping my sister with maths problems but I think most of my experience comes from having 5 or so maths teachers across my years studying maths. This has helped me build up my own style of teaching as each of them teach very differently (some ways that I preferred more than others!) This eventually lead to me getting a grade 9 at GCSEs and predicted an A* at A levels. The best way which all my teachers have always done is finding a way that works for each individual student as I mentioned earlier. Everyone works differently, some people need more intervention and help in their work whereas others are happy to work independently after understand the key areas of work.
Although I don’t have any formal experience, I am exited about having the opportunity to inspire others to like the subject and to work hard in all they do, not just maths.
