When it comes to teaching, I believe that building a strong relationship with the student is important. By creating an enjoyable environment for the student, I can understand what they like, dislike, and how best they learn, which is always positive. When teaching a student, at our first session, we will get to know each other and establish a long term goal together. That goal could be a grade improvement, or it could be refining a skill, such as essay writing. The lessons will be simple, focused on the student, and rewarding for everybody.
One of our sessions may look like beginning with a simple warm up like a word association game, getting a minds aligned and ready to analyse a text. This would be followed by a short presentation, highlighting techniques used by the author of the text. We may then jump into choosing a passage and zooming in, looking closely at the techniques used, why they were used, and what impact they have had. This example however, is simply a speculation. If a student struggles with focusing on presentations, we might jump straight into analysing the text. Adaptations such as these are key to my teaching style, as I am committed to building the best learning environment for my students.
As someone succeeding in the further education system diagnosed with ADHD, I would be more than happy to work with a student who may be struggling with executive dysfunction, distraction, and procrastination. I have learned to build my own systems for studying and I would love to help another student build their own.
I truly love literature and language, and teaching someone else to appreciate it while helping them succeed would be a blessing. I would love to work with a student who needs my help, whatever their skill level.
