Having worked and volunteered with young people from ages 5-17, I have learned firsthand that each pupil/student has a different approach to learning. When it comes to teaching English comprehension and literature, it is important for students to trust their instinct, and have the tools to express their ideas in a competent and scholarly way. Each passage or piece of writing can be responded to with the following questions: what did this writing make you feel or think? Why? From this springboard, we can develop a greater understanding of how and why literature conveys ideas, and what tools writers use to convey them.
