I have twenty years of experience in teaching psychology. Different students would require different teaching methods to meet their needs. Similarly, different contents also would be delivered in different approaches to achieve an optimal outcome.
To many students, psychology is abstract. How to acquire abstract knowledge more effectively? Educational research suggests using concrete examples. I used examples to illustrate the key concepts and map how these examples are related to the concepts of the psychology principles. Furthermore, within the same field of psychology, there are many similar theories explaining the same behaviours. To help students comprehend the distinction between these theories, I list them in a table to highlight their similarities and differences. Research has shown that conducting a comparison between these highly similar theories could help avoid confusion, and thus, it helps students to memorise and apply them in different situations more effectively. There are many facts in psychology study. How can students memorise them well? I use short questions and multiple choices questions to sharpen students' understanding of the concepts and aid their memory formation. According to research, these exercises could consolidate their learning and lead students to achieve better. Also, I would advise students on some memory methods to help recall these facts. Motivation plays a key factor in learning. I would ask students many different thought-stimulating questions to enhance their interest in the topics and expand their horizon of how these concepts could help explain other human behaviours in different situations. To help students understand some basic psychology principles, I would engage them in a similar research study so that they could understand how specific psychology facts were derived based on experimental analysis. All these active learning strategies could help students learn a lot better in the subject.
