For my lessons, I like to first help the student by giving them examples and letting the student give reasoning for each of the steps. Then, after helping out the student for a couple of examples, I like to give the student practice problems so that they can work on them and we can go through any problem areas that we see. With this, the student will improve their logical reasoning skills since they will work on the reasoning part of mathematics for why they are doing what they are doing. Furthermore, by doing this active recall, they are also improving their ability to handle these types of problems when they encounter them.
With my experience from my GCSEs and the olympiads and competitions that I have done, the best way to prepare for them is to practice and master all of the concepts that are on the syllabus, and this is done best by watching someone explain it to you, and then you practising it to get your brain familiar with the types of problems, how to approach them, and what types of solutions they have as well as the logic behind solving them. I think that by implementing this into the way that I teach, the dynamics of the lessons will be tailored directly to the improvement of the student and them achieving the grade that they have always wanted. If you want to achieve these scores just like I was able to, don't hesitate to contact me for tutoring!
