My Social Studies Tutoring Approach (Geography, History, Modern Studies)
I believe every student can succeed in Social Studies with the right support. My lessons are structured yet flexible, adapting to each student’s age, goals and learning style.
For younger learners (primary / early secondary)
· I use maps, timelines, pictures and short videos to make abstract ideas concrete.
· We play fact-matching games, create simple storyboards of historical events and use everyday examples (e.g., weather, local landmarks) to introduce geographical concepts.
· I focus on building curiosity, asking “why?” and “how?” so learning feels like exploration, not memorisation.
For S3, GCSE, National 5 and A-level students
· I break down complex topics into manageable chunks:
· Geography: physical processes (rivers, coasts, glaciation), human geography (urbanisation, population, development), map skills and case studies.
· History: key events (e.g., WWI, WWII, the Cold War, Scottish history), source analysis, essay structure and evaluating interpretations.
· Modern Studies: political systems (UK, Scottish Parliament, USA), social issues (poverty, crime, inequality) and understanding media / voting behaviour.
· I teach exam techniques – how to answer source questions, write balanced essays and manage time in the SQA National 5 exam.
· We practise with past papers and marking schemes so students enter the exam feeling confident, not overwhelmed.
· I also help with homework catch up, revision planning and building revision notes that actually work.
For university and adult learners
· I can support human or physical geography, modern history essays, politics or international relations modules and quantitative methods for social science research.
· Need a refresher before a professional exam or a career change? I offer tailored sessions.
For companies or groups
· I design practical workshops on using data in social research, critical thinking from historical sources or understanding political systems with real world examples.
My approach
· Patient and encouraging – I meet students where they are.
· Mix of explanation, guided practice and independent work so they learn to think for themselves.
· Online lessons with screen sharing, interactive whiteboards and shared documents (great for annotating sources together).
· Free 15-minute chat to understand your child’s needs before the first session.
My experience
· 3 years of tutoring (previously maths, now extended to Social Studies).
· I’m skilled at spotting gaps whether it’s misunderstanding a historical concept, struggling with essay structure or mixing up geographical terminology.
· I fill those gaps without making students feel lost or embarrassed.
Discounts for groups
· Small group sessions available (e.g., two or three S3 students studying together).
