A typical private tutoring session lasts 60 minutes and includes a 5 minute targeted warm up activity (such as a times table ‘snap’ exercise or a division question and ‘finger hold up’) intended to build excitement to learn as well as engage core skills needed before moving onto the more challenging lesson. Next a 30 minute ‘traditional’ white board and powerpoint example and practice lesson occurs in order to expose students to the topic and identify weaker areas, before moving onto a 15 minute individual personalised worksheet (created before the lesson) which targets groups of questions similar to those the student found challenging in the lesson to ensure a sound understanding of the subject area is reached. Finally the lesson ends with either a 10 minute quiz with (online) sticker or badge reward or additional worksheet. Upon request five minute oral question practice sheets will be provided to parents in order to ensure long term memory and confidence are built upon in a quick and engaging manner before the next session. I offer 90 minute group sessions for high achieving students (please see my page) however, for those with learning difficulties individual lessons are required, due to necessary individual attention being needed to conduct tutoring sessions.
Group lessons last 90 minutes and have between 2-4 students and are offered to high achieving students aiming to get head starts in content or those wanting extra preparation for 11+ plus exams. Group lessons are recommended for this student profile, as these lessons often include short tests, problem solving style questions (typically asked in more challenging tests) and focus less on skill acquisition, as opposed to mathematical understanding.
Lessons can be chosen weekly each term or on a more irregular basis depending on the students needs. Both lessons include copies of completed work and can be filmed upon request with signed consent forms if parents would like to have further access to lessons. Weekly sessions also include emailed monthly progress reports as well free parent tutor meetings upon request to discuss the students progress and decide upon lesson trajectory.
