I've been tutoring for over 5 years in Maths and Sciences, from primary school through to A-level, and including students with SEND (mostly ASD, but also dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as some mental health needs). I've worked right across the ability range, from students aiming for top 9 and A* grades, to students doing required resits, and they all bring something special to lessons.
I like to work with students on tackling the topics they're struggling with and breaking down problematic areas into smaller skills to gain a deeper understanding. Often in mathematics a missed topic, perhaps even several years back, can make current studies confusing and frustrating, and tutoring gives an opportunity to find that misconception and remedy it, often bringing improvement in a much wider range of questions.
I don't tend to set homework for most of my students, and instead prefer them to bring topics they wish they had more time to cover in school, but there have been students for whom additional homework was important, and I'm flexible with that when I need to be.
I firmly believe that whatever a student's goals, there is a purpose for learning at least some area of maths and science, and I like working with a student to find an area that they do enjoy. I love watching my students grow in confidence over the course of tutoring, being able to tackle harder questions and starting to answer questions in class and finally face their exams with less trepidation.
