Lesson format:
Each session begins with a short conversation or visual review to understand the student’s progress, inspirations, and challenges. I then introduce a focused concept or technique, often through visual references, samples, or live demonstrations. The majority of the lesson is practical studio work, where students experiment, create, and refine their work while receiving continuous one-to-one guidance. We finish with reflection, feedback, and clear next steps or optional practice.
Specialist focus: dyes, embroidery, and pattern:
My speciality lies in dyeing techniques, embroidery, and pattern development, and these areas are woven into lessons as core skills or creative extensions. Students may explore natural and synthetic dyes, colour mixing, surface design, and fabric manipulation. In embroidery, lessons cover stitches, texture, layering, and storytelling through thread, combining traditional methods with contemporary approaches. Pattern lessons focus on motif creation, repeats, symmetry, rhythm, and translating ideas from research and sketches into finished designs.
Content & lesson dynamics:
Lessons are interactive and adaptable. Depending on the student’s needs, sessions may focus on skill-building exercises, guided projects, portfolio development, or conceptual exploration. I encourage experimentation, problem-solving, and critical thinking, helping students understand not just how to make something, but why it works visually and conceptually.
Personalisation:
Private lessons are fully tailored. I adjust materials, techniques, and project briefs based on the student’s learning style, confidence level, and goals, whether that’s academic support, portfolio preparation, textile-based practice, or personal creative growth.
Experience & teaching approach:
I bring strong technical expertise alongside a supportive teaching style that builds confidence and independence. My aim is to create a calm, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable taking creative risks, developing their own visual language, and growing at their own pace.
Ultimately, my lessons help students build solid foundations, refine textile skills, and develop a unique artistic voice within art, design, and surface pattern practice.
