I take a varied approach when teaching English to students and each methodology used is on an individual needs basis. Even still, I am an advocate of task-based learning as I have found it to be very effective for the majority of my students. The reason being, it focuses on communication rather than just structure alone. This allows students to gain meaningful knowledge as they are able to put their learning to practical use. For example, a personal favourite of mine for students struggling with creative writing is using a task such as describing their favourite place in detail with particular emphasis on what they can see, taste and smell. I have seen how tasks such as this help expand students’ imagination and use of vocabulary which in turn has a positive impact on their writing.

A further method I use in teaching is communicative language learning. I have found this method to be a great aid in helping students to use learning in a variety of ways. This is achieved through allowing students to be part of the learning process through expressing their ideas and opinions. This helps to cultivate their learning and allows me to evaluate the students’ strengths and highlight any areas for improvement. In addition, communicative language learning is advantageous for speaking, listening, reading and writing development for students. I have found this method to be highly successful when teaching English.

I am adaptable to working with students of all needs and levels. I have particular interest and experience working with students with SEND.
