My very first lesson with students includes collaboratively completing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis so I can understand the challenging areas of the subjects taught, what they feel confident in and gain an understanding of the students preferred learning styles which will keep them engaged.

*This SWOT analysis has been amended which includes some content taught from my MA education degree.
*The SWOT analysis is revisited within a few weeks to assess whether progress has been made.

Lesson layout:

Preliminary: Games and discussions/ debates (5/10 minutes).

Main lesson: Commences with verbal discussion about areas that will be taught as well as the required resources.

Teaching methods in main lesson include: visuals, videos, mind mapping as well as teacher modelled examples with students taking Cornell notes. My students are also usually expected to answer questions in their notebooks to check their understanding.

Additionally, there is also opportunity for student centred/student led lessons where students are given agency to construct their own learning. For example students may explore a particular topic via books/ the internet/ museums and presenting their research on PowerPoint/Google slides or through discussion or posters and flash cards etc..)

End of month lessons can include my own assessments as well as past examination papers from exam boards. This is followed by feedback, discussion, progress strategies and reviewing examiners reports and mark schemes.

Ultimately, I aim for my lessons to be enjoyable and engaging where depths of knowledge have been gained and is reflected in assessment scores.
