I have my Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech and three years experience as a freelance private tutor for math and chemistry for short and long term students. I like to get to know my students personally to better relate the lesson plan to interests and existing knowledge to foster an understanding of the fundamentals of the topics.
My typical approach is to look at a students past homework or tests to get a feel for where they are in their understanding and where they may be tripped up in the topic. Using this as a jumping off point, I like to provide and go through example problems of increasing complexity to slowly introduce the more tricky portions of the lesson.
I always encourage my students to ask questions whenever something either doesn't make sense or may relate to another topic.
