EDUCATION
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Florida International University and a Master's in Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. My postgraduate work in ESL through a SMART grant from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, in English as a Second Language focuses on reading, math, and science.. I am certified as a reading specialist in special education, ESL, and TESOL.

EXPERIENCE
I have 13 years of classroom experience working with K-5 students struggling with reading and mathematics. I earned the Trinity Prize of Excellence in 1999 and 2003.
I then taught intervention classes for high school students with dyslexia and other related disorders. As the campus reading specialist, I taught low-performing students struggling with the reading and language arts sections for state exams, ELA 1 and ELA 2, and college preparation exams such as ASVAB, PSAT, and SAT. I sponsored the literary club to mentor students' creative writing pursuits. My creative writing students published three literary anthologies.

REMOTE INSTRUCTION
I retired from the classroom to tutor elementary and secondary international students preparing for the ISEE, ELTS, and FCE levels A-1 through C-3 English proficiency exams.
For the past five years, I have also taught American students reading, vocabulary, close reading skills, responding to literature and expository text, and primary and elementary math classes online.

TEACHING STYLE
My high-energy teaching style and patience with shy learners create a happy and engaged classroom. I personalize instruction for each student based on present needs and acceleration for high-performing students.

PERSONAL
I live on Galveston Island off the coast of Texas and enjoy many outdoor activities. I also have a one-eyed dog named Pop-Eye, who loves to run and play and keeps me on my toes. We go for walks on the beach, the Seawall, or the local dog park. My hobbies include beachcombing, creating shell mosaics, cycling, and swimming. I also volunteer for Artist Boat Inc., an environmental group, and help out at our local humane society.
I look forward to meeting you in class soon!
