My lessons are structured, engaging and carefully designed to meet the individual needs of each student. Every learner comes with their own strengths, challenges and goals, so my approach is always personalised. At the start of our work together, I take time to understand each student’s specific targets, learning style and areas for development. This helps me to plan lessons that are both purposeful and relevant, ensuring that every session contributes directly to improved understanding and confidence in Film and Media Studies.
Each lesson follows a clear format that balances explanation, discussion and applied learning. We usually begin by reviewing any previous work or tasks, identifying what has gone well and where further improvement might be needed. I then introduce the main topic or skill for that session, whether it is analysing a film sequence, interpreting media representations, revising key terminology or developing an essay plan. Concepts are explained clearly and supported with examples that make theoretical ideas easier to grasp and apply.
I use a variety of online tools to make lessons interactive and visually engaging. Shared documents, slides, annotated exemplars and media clips are used throughout sessions so that students can see how to approach analysis or structure written responses effectively. Lessons often include opportunities for students to practise new skills during the session, followed by immediate feedback and guidance on how to strengthen their work.
My teaching style is supportive but also encourages independent thinking. Students are invited to question ideas, develop arguments and justify their interpretations, which helps them to become more confident and critical thinkers. I place strong emphasis on improving essay writing, academic structure, and exam technique, as these are essential skills for success across all qualifications. I also work with students on time management, organisation and revision planning so that they can approach their studies with greater clarity and control.
At the end of each lesson, we summarise the key points covered and set clear next steps or short follow-up tasks to consolidate learning. Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure that students can see measurable improvement in both their knowledge and written work. My aim is to create a learning environment that is calm, focused and encouraging, where students feel supported to achieve their best and develop a genuine interest in the subject.
