If you’ve ever felt frustrated with your English teacher for asking you to delve into the symbolism behind an author’s choice for ‘red/blue/yellow curtains’, and understandably wondered ‘who cares?’, then I’m here to explain why you should!
Literature not only provides a fantastic insight into the world around you, but the one before, and after, too. It offers a glimpse into a past gone by, and gives warnings about the future. It connects us through time, geographical differences, age, etc; there is something quite beautifully human about that.
That doesn’t mean, however, I’d ask you to dive into the works of Shakespeare, immediately (though, I am quite partial to his work), no, we’d start with something YOU enjoy- be it another book, or film, game- that’s entirely up to you. By choosing something you’re passionate about already, it will be easier to feel compelled to understand it better. Once you learn those skills in an environment you feel comfortable in, you will find just how easily transferable they are in works you don’t particularly resonate with.
So, should you wish to join me on this quest, and if you think you’re ready to REALLY understand just what the colour of those dastardly curtains really mean, then send me an email, and we will go on the journey together. I look forward to working with you.
