I was shocked when I read a message from my student Jessica: "I jotted down all the fancy words in reading passages and used them in my Writing Task 2."
Jessica is from Singapore, and she reached out to me in early January. We prepared for the test for a month, and she took the exam in early February. The result? Overall 7.5: Listening 8.5, Writing 7.0, Speaking 8.0. Our hard work paid off beautifully. Her Reading score was a bit low though — 5.5.
When I asked her why, she said: "I wanted to get a high score in Writing, so I wrote down every high-level and topic-related words and phrases I saw in passages and used them in Writing Task 2. I did it just in case I got an unfamiliar topic in my Writing Task 2." I was blindsided by what she did, but it worked. She scored in Writing what most candidates dream about!
Our daily speaking sessions on various topics played an instrumental role in achieving that 8.0. This is exactly what I do with all of my students.
Yes, IELTS must be taken seriously, but it should never become a barrier between a teacher and a student. I treat my students like close friends — they can ask any question, about any topic. My lessons are fun, interactive, and motivating, which is key to building confidence and progress.
I have the skills and knowledge, and you have the will and goals. Let’s achieve them together!
