My background in theoretical physics means that problem solving is a large part of what I do every day. I therefore encourage students to ask questions freely and aim to create lessons that are conversational and engaging rather than simply lecturing through a textbook.
My lessons are tailored to the individual student rather than following a fixed format. I am flexible in terms of my teaching style and format and I am happy to make my lessons more exam-focused or curiosity driven. I would begin by identifying the topics or concepts the student is finding difficult and then work through them from the underlying ideas. Later, we solve the exam questions.
I place a strong emphasis on understanding rather than memorising methods. I want students to know why a particular equation, technique or physical principle works, so that they can apply it confidently when faced with unfamiliar questions. Where appropriate, I also like to explore interesting ideas beyond the syllabus, particularly when this helps make an otherwise abstract topic more intuitive.
