From my experience as a tutor, students are often not aware themselves of their best learning methods and for the first few sessions with a new student I seek to ascertain that. I believe that the best way to approach tutoring a new student is to be as welcoming as possible as learning can often be stressful and a tutor's job relies on not only their ability to teach but their ability to increase the student's confidence.
I incorporate many methods in my lessons so that students remain enthusiastic to learn with me. For instance, I often start classes with a quick check in with them and then move into the lessons and work they had in the previous week. After letting them explain, I typically seek to identify any particular points they may have struggled with and first tackle those before moving into homework/practice problems. I typically encourage students to have their powerpoint lessons or notes open when doing homework and practice problems as I believe it helps solidify the information and increase the confidence. However, in the final 10 or so minutes of a lesson I let students complete a couple questions without any external help to finish off each lesson on a confident note.
When students are particularly struggling or feel blocked with a concept I always try to go back to the root of the concept as I've found that there are normally underlying comprehension issues for each struggle. By going back to the basics of each concept, I try and confirm the student's understanding while incrementally building up to the point they are struggling with.
