Hello, my name is Richard, I’m Oxford-educated, and have taught English in eighteen different countries, in South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. I teach all levels, from beginner to advanced and Proficiency, and enjoy helping students prepare for IELTS.

My style is to work with you as a team to achieve your goals. Developing English at any level is hard, so we have to be prepared to work hard. But, because it’s so hard, in order to keep going we have to enjoy learning, so we must have fun. So, serious fun is the way forward! Serious fun. And, after all, learning is a key to a happy and fulfilling life.

The elementary levels are all about learning the basic grammar, which we need to build our English. Intermediate level involves adding a mass of vocabulary to this framework. For B2, Upper Intermediate, I have created a vast set of materials called Adventures in Word Land, which offer the in-depth knowledge of word families needed for full competence in Academic English and English for Work. At the Advanced levels, the Use of English sections of the Cambridge exams, together with authentic materials, are vital.

As I’ve said, one of my areas of specialisation is IELTS. Yes, IELTS is hard, serious fun. In the Reading, we can be Sherlock Holmes, finding the clues to each answer. In the Speaking, we play the role of the celebrity, happy to answer the examiner's questions and back up our answers with supporting information. In Writing we can learn from model answers and put what we've learned into our own writing.
