My basic method in approaching new topics is to use pre-existing materials (eg. textbooks, worksheets) to help the pupil form a basis of understanding, then diverging from the standardised layout to a more involved approach (eg. asking the pupil questions, allowing their imagination to find a new perspective), leading them to feel confident as they are faced with exercises & other problems to solve in order to consolidate their new knowledge.
