Having had experience working in Hong Kong as a Native English Language teacher, I learnt how to deliver engaging and interactive lessons, to ensure all students felt comfortable and had fun. I aim to build students confidence with encouragement, patience and strong communication.
Depending on the topic (Phonics, reading, writing or grammar) I have a similar structure to my lessons. This includes a wam up/introduction, usually reiterating the same phrases and questions each time to remind them of English words they already know and feel comfortable speaking. For example; what did you have for breakfast today? What is the weather like?
For the focused lesson, I try to use recognisable objects, games or visuals and create a discussion about those instead of only doing written book work. By engaging students with a theme they know (sport, places, food, animals etc), they feel more capable of completing the written exercises.
At the end of the lesson, I like to ask them which parts of the lesson they enjoyed and recall at least one new word or phrase that they did not know before. This makes students feel proud of how they are learning and feel more confident using English regularly.
