I tailor my lessons to the specific needs of the student by identifying their key strengths and weaknesses. I focus on developing the weaknesses whether this be through analysing a text together, learning how to write a strong essay, proofreading work or doing more basic grammar and spelling exercises to improve writing proficiency. If the student has an assessment for school I will assist them with that, whether that be helping to plan and organise their work or proofread what they have written. If the student is studying a particular text I make sure to review the context of the text with them to help them understand the text fully, and then choose key passages for us to analyse together. I review key literary techniques with them and help them to identify them throughout the text, ensuring that they have the opportunity to find these themselves while also pointing out anything they have missed. I teach them the best way to develop and evidence an argument using this analysis and then advise them on an ideal structure for their writing. I then give them some time to write their own response in order for them to independently develop their skills and then provide helpful feedback on their writing, outlining both strengths and areas for improvement. Depending on the student, I might get them to re-write the paragraph and apply the feedback, or suggest another passage for us to look at. If the student has time, I will give them a homework task to practice what we have learnt and then we will review that task at the start of the next lesson.
