Penny Laycock

My lessons are friendly, supportive and tailored to each student. I have five years of experience as a university lecturer in Social and Public Policy, and I have taught students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

I adapt each lesson to what you want to achieve, whether that is building confidence in a subject, preparing for exams, improving essay writing, understanding difficult theories or developing research and critical thinking skills. Lessons are interactive rather than simply me talking at you, and I will explain ideas clearly, work through examples with you and give you opportunities to apply what you have learned.

I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, so we can focus on understanding the material rather than simply memorising it. I can also provide guidance on essay structure, academic writing, referencing and developing strong arguments.

Whether you need help with a particular topic or more general support, I will work with you to make the lessons useful, engaging and suited to the way you learn best. I can support students with a range of social science subjects, including social policy, sociology, politics and related areas. I am also happy to help students who are unsure where to start, breaking down assignments or challenging concepts into manageable steps and helping you develop the confidence to work independently.
