I currently tutor one year 10 student preparing for his GCSES and I focus largely on active recall to embed the mathematical procedures in his head. I do this by completing a series of similar questions within a topic that the student may struggle with. This allows the student to practice both with my guidance and then on their own too mimic an exam style setting. When approaching exam season, going through exam papers the student has done in their own time is a good for of revision as talking through their incorrect answers or looking at where a student may have lost marks can be really beneficial. This also means the student can complete work even outside of tutoring sessions, maximising their potential.
Keeping lessons engaging is also important as I wouldn’t want a student to dread tutoring; creating a structured session based on the student would be the most efficient way to teach them as the upside to personal tutoring is that the lesson can be customised to the student, unlike in a classroom environment where that can be more challenging.
