I am a second-year Natural Sciences student at the University of Cambridge and I tutor Mathematics at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I achieved an A* in A-level Mathematics (OCR MEI), and having sat the papers recently, I am familiar with the current specifications and the way questions are set.

In my experience, students who are struggling with a particular topic are often held back by something earlier in the course rather than the topic in front of them. A student who cannot make progress with integration by parts, for example, frequently has an unresolved difficulty with differentiation. For that reason I usually begin with a short diagnostic in the first session, working through questions across several areas to establish where the genuine gaps lie.

Lessons run for one hour. I explain the concept and work through an example, then hand over to the student and observe while they attempt questions themselves. This is the most useful part of the session, as it shows precisely where the reasoning breaks down. As examinations approach I make extensive use of past paper questions, since understanding a topic and answering an examiner's question in the expected form are separate skills.

I encourage students to interrupt and ask questions as soon as something is unclear. A confused student who says nothing tends to lose several weeks before the problem surfaces.
