At the beginning of my lessons, I always ask pupils what they are learning at school and what they are finding difficult, this way I can tailor my lesson to topics that they find difficult. I also like to ask more specific questions about the topic such as what exactly do they struggle with or what do they not understand so I can better understand my pupils’ feelings about the topic which has proven to have a positive impact on them. I find that understanding their individual needs helps me build their confidence and makes lessons more comfortable and enjoyable.

I make my lessons as engaging as possible, my lessons are typically an hour long so to maximise this, I like to go through worked exercises then me and my pupil will go through it together and I then encourage them to try it themselves. This allows me to identify any areas they are still struggling with and provide support where needed. I make sure my exercises are relatable to the pupils and I also like to use engaging visuals alongside praise and encouragement as being positive is one of the most important aspects about tutoring!

I also use past paper questions at the end of each lesson so that the pupils understand how to apply their knowledge that they learned in the lesson in an exam format so that they are prepared to get the best grades they can! I also review their answers with them, explaining mistakes clearly and showing them how they can improve their approach in future questions.
