Over many years of teaching I have made History interesting for students by linking the learning to present day situations.

I break down concepts into smaller chunks so students are not cognitively overloaded.

I utilise retrieval practice to help students retrieve knowledge from their long term memory and apply it to their working memory. By practicing recalling information deliberately and intentionally the student is better prepared to recall information in stressful situations such as tests/exams.

I create positive relationships with students based on high expectations for them and an understanding that they have to be prepared to work hard and evaluate their learning and progress alongside my guidance and feedback.

I also created a culture where it is okay to make mistakes as long as we work back and understand why, what and how the error was made before moving on.
