This approach is what we got taught at university to use to support teaching mathematics lessons and supporting pupils in mathematics. Concrete resources are physical resources which are use to help understand number and amounts. The next stage is pictorial when children begin drawing these amounts using shapes or pictures to help represent amounts. After this stage is abstract where children use actual numbers for example 5 + 3 = 8. It’s important as a teacher to assess and recognise areas children need developing in and learning styles which work best for each child. This is what I would reinforce within my teaching and supporting pupils when tutoring them to ensure they are progressing to achieve their fullest potential.
