Each lesson follows a clear structure to ensure that students become familiar with the pace and expectations of their learning. This includes a starter activity, content input, a main activity and a plenary.
My lessons are interactive; I incorporate songs, video clips and opportunities for movement to keep students engaged. For example, I use activities such as active punctuation when teaching sentence structure or the use of inverted commas.
When appropriate, I use manipulatives, which I find particularly effective when exploring addition, subtraction and place value. Students may be asked in advance to have a set number of objects, such as pencils or teddies, ready to use during the lesson.
I also incorporate a range of activities, including quizzes, sorting tasks, role play and multiple choice questions, to support different learning styles. Each lesson is assessed to inform future planning, ensuring that learning progresses at an appropriate pace and level for each student.
Initially, I assess the student in line with National Curriculum guidelines and use data provided by class teachers and parents to ensure that each lesson is appropriately pitched. I can provide parents with a brief written summary of the student’s work and their progress after each session, if required.
