I am a dedicated and enthusiastic Secondary School Mathematics Teacher with over 13 years of teaching experience across both Jamaica and the United Kingdom. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Mathematics Education. I consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering student growth and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. I currently teach students aged 12 to 17, guiding them through their secondary school journey, including exam preparation for GCSE.

Throughout my career, I have developed a teaching philosophy rooted in conceptual understanding, student engagement, and high expectations. I believe that mathematics is not just about procedures and formulas but about thinking critically, exploring patterns, solving real-world problems, and appreciating the logic and beauty of the subject. I work hard to ensure that all students, regardless of their ability level, experience maths as an exciting and meaningful subject.

One of the key strategies I use in my teaching is diagnostic assessment. Before introducing a new topic, I always assess my students for prerequisite knowledge and common misconceptions. This helps me to better understand their current level of thinking and tailor my lessons accordingly. By identifying gaps early, I can provide timely intervention and support, enabling students to build confidence and achieve success. This reflective and responsive approach ensures that learning is personalised and inclusive.

My lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging. I incorporate a variety of teaching methods, including discussions, real-life applications, problem-solving tasks, and the use of digital tools where appropriate. I always aim to make learning fun and accessible while still challenging students to think deeply. I introduce abstract concepts in a way that stretches their thinking and encourages them to make connections between ideas. This not only strengthens their mathematical reasoning but also prepares them for higher-level study.

I place a strong emphasis on communication and classroom culture. I encourage my students to ask questions, share their thought processes, and feel safe expressing their uncertainties. Creating this open and supportive environment helps students become more independent learners and fosters resilience when they face difficult problems. I am particularly proud of how my approach helps students gain confidence in a subject that many often find intimidating.

Having taught in two different education systems, I have developed a broad and flexible approach to curriculum planning and instruction. I understand how to adapt my teaching to meet the expectations of various examination boards, and I am skilled at preparing students for both internal and external assessments. My international experience has also helped me develop cultural awareness and sensitivity, which I bring into the classroom to support students from diverse backgrounds
