When I was mentoring one of the Year 8 classes, I helped students with their pronunciation, spelling, and grammar, and supported them in understanding the key concepts of what they were learning. I took time to explain difficult ideas in a way they could relate to, and encouraged them to ask questions and participate more actively in class discussions. Not only this, but I also mentored one of the nursery classes, where I focused on developing the children’s reading skills. I read with them individually and in small groups, helping them sound out words, improve their vocabulary, and build confidence in reading aloud. This was a rewarding experience because I could see their progress over time and how much they enjoyed the sessions.
Through both experiences, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills, as I had to adapt my approach depending on the age and ability of the students I was helping. It also taught me patience, empathy, and how to give constructive feedback in a positive and encouraging way. Mentoring has inspired me to continue contributing to education in some capacity in the future, as it was very fulfilling to support others in their learning journey and make a difference in their development.
