With previous students, I often found that beginning the session with a brainstorming activity is best. For example, we would read through a passage, problem, or essay question together and talk bigger picture - before focusing in on the specifics. This way, we have a large bank of rich content to begin with. Throughout the session I would push you to expand on your ideas, and gently challenge them, so that both sides of the 'argument' per se are fleshed out fully. After we have a firm grasp on the topic, I'd ask you to write a short response, from which I would suggest improvements.
I prefer online sessions, for two reasons, 1. This allows for more flexibility and comfort for the both of us, and 2. I would prepare a powerpoint or digital brochure equivalent prior to each session, which would then be shared to you during the session. This way we can utilise the technological resources available to us and complete thorough research - always thinking outside the box, and always justifying our responses.
If you were struggling to understand a concept, I'd ensure to strip it back to its bare bones and thoroughly talk you through it, with analogies, examples, etc.
My sessions are fun, and more of a place of discussion between two equals than a strict teacher-student session. I would not order you to do anything, we could decide our tasks together!
