Michael Black

I am a scuba diving instructor as my main role and work all over the world. Diving has taken me from quiet islands to busy coastal towns and everything in between, and I’ve had the chance to work with people from every walk of life. Even on my days off, you’ll still find me underwater or watching dive videos while pretending I’m having a rest. Netflix is my go-to when I finally sit still for long enough.

Alongside diving, I tutor 11+, English at primary level and mathematics and science up to A Level. I enjoy helping students break tricky topics down so they finally click, especially those who think they “just aren’t maths people”. I have experience across all UK curricula as well as the German curriculum, which helps when supporting families who move or worldschool.

I completed the 11+ equivalent myself when I was younger, so I understand the level of commitment, consistency and confidence-building involved. My favourite subjects in school were maths, science and physical education, and those interests have followed me right through my adult life. Whether underwater or in the classroom, I like helping people push their limits safely and realise they can go further than they think.

I also bring a calm, structured approach to tutoring, shaped by years of teaching students in high-pressure diving environments. Patience, clear explanations and building confidence step by step are at the core of how I work. Whether in the water or online, I aim to make learning feel achievable, steady and genuinely enjoyable.
