I have been a maths and English tutor for 5 years, which I find very rewarding and a great way to fulfil the passion I have about working with children.
I like to approach teaching students around their needs as individuals- I find out what you feel your strengths and development areas are, what your favourite and least favourite parts of the subject is and take it from there!
Over the weeks, we work at a steady pace to ensure that the learning has been thoroughly understood by doing different activities and variations. Once an adequate level of understanding has been reached, I compile a group of questions to be completed which will informs me if there are any gaps in this particular area of learning before we move to the next (rather than labelling it as a “test,” it’s more of a check-in!) Every child learns at their own pace so there is no time limit on how long we spend on that area of learning!
Although I use a mix of resources, whether these are printouts, exercise/workbooks that are age appropriate, I adopt quite an interactive style to learning instead of just reading out of a text book. This allows me to build a good relationship with the student but also maintains engagement!
For younger students are for those who struggle with concentration, I do enjoy throwing in an educational game to keep the session effective for all!
Finally I love to finish all in-person sessions off with a sticker (mostly for primary school age children, but welcome for all to have)!
